Disconcerting States #9

11th November, 2024.  Veterans Day.

By John Dean

Dear people,

Great drive today on the autumnal, leaf-bright, storm-washed road across Virginia. The Old Dominion!

And down the gullet of the rich Shenandoah Valley, part of the great Appalachian Valley that’s spread out between the Blue Ridge to the East and the Allegheny Mountains to the West. We went down along the American spine — extended, extending….

Have to catch up on sleep (or sleep catches up on me).

Off to bed early. Back on line tomorrow about our Disconcerting States.

Hang in there…. To learn much more about that drive and who I drove with…….

For: “Whither thou goest, America, in thy shiny car in the night?”

— Jack Kerouac, On the Road.

Disconcerting States #8

Sunday, November 10, 2024. By John Dean Before the 2020 presidential election between Hillary Clinton and Donald J. Trump, I worked with a group of people that prepared a public program to be given soon after that election. That program was to be about: “Successful Women in US Politics”. Boy did we get that wrong. So we scrambled […]

Jugendkultur in Augsburgs Innenstadt – was fehlt, was brauchts?!

Disconcerting States #7

Saturday, November 9, 2024. Round Midnight By John Dean So now it’s the first weekend after the election and what I found most striking among the mood of the people today— at home base and in general out in the city crowds — is relief. I was out on the DC Mall today in the bright sunshine and mild, […]

Disconcerting States #6

Friday, November 8, 2024. Noontime. By John Dean In the house where I’m staying and the average Americans I’m staying with, we have had a wide-screen television on about twenty-hours a day before and throughout the day after the election itself, the sixth of November. The TV was on all the time. Sometimes with loud […]

Disconcerting States #5

It’s post-Elected President Day:  November 7, 2024 By John Dean Writing from Falls Church, Va., US of A (fifteen minutes from the Whitehouse), Thursday noon. Many in Europe now see the current presidential victory as the triumph of American fascism. We will see about that. There’s a long game to play here, with serious guardrails […]

Disconcerting States #4

Day 3, USA: November 6, 2024 — Elected Day. By John Dean Someone woke me up this morning and said: „You want to hear some good news?“ „Yeah,“ I mumbled. „I don’t have any.” Shocked, I jumped out of bed, scrambled to the living room. I saw the news splashed all red, white and blue across the […]

Disconcerting States #3

Day 2, USA: November 5, 2024. By John Dean We are down to the finishing line. On late-night TV last night a comic said: “It feels like the whole country is waiting to get the news of a biopsy”. Democrats declare they are “nauseously optimistic”. Kamala Harris keeps vigorously belting out her message.  From Pennsylvania we […]
